always get this question. First of all, remember – Curiousity killed the cat! Well, obviously it s not my real name. Reasons:
Many actors/models use stage names – they want easy to remember, Google search friendly, loud name. Also pretty often they want to separate private life from show off life. Also there are Equity’s issues – you can not use your real name if it s already taken in acting world.
When I started this lookalike nonsense 7 years ago, many agents didn’t want to hire me because of my Russian nationality. They’d assume I couldn’t not speak good English,
wouldn’t have permission to work etc.. Eastern European and 3d world countries workers were not that popular. It s different now, as UK realised that Eastern Europeans are humble, strong and ready to work more for less money. In fact now they prefer to hire them.
Though I was on a student visa here, and had a right to work only a few hours a week, so it freaked agents out as well.
So I took this name and didn’t flaunt my Russian nationality. It worked.
Though being Russian is fun. Now it works even better as it brings out this Lara’s fighty side with a Russian twist – usually people start joking about Russian Mafia, Russian Military, Russian spies etc.. Well, yes, I am playing with these “sexy Russian spy” images and preconceptions now.
And yes, I get this “What s your real name” question all the time. Ok – I’m Elena. Pleased to meet you X. Think twice before asking my real Russian surname. As I said – Curiousity killed the cat. 😉
